The Big 5 van Zuid-Afrika is voor toeristen synoniem aan de vijf wilde dieren die je in ieder geval gezien moet hebben als je Zuid-Afrika bezoekt. Voor sommige mensen is het zelfs dé reden om te gaan. Maar er is vanaf nu nog een Big 5, dichter bij huis: die van theater, dans, film, muziek en beeldende kunst. De ontmoeting tussen Zuid-Afrikaanse en Nederlandse theater- en filmmakers, choreografen, muzikanten en kunstenaars vormt de basis voor het nieuwe, internationale festival BIG5.

In het weekend van 11, 12 en 13 juni bent u getuige van interessante nieuwe producties, in Europa nooit eerder vertoonde voorstellingen, films, muziek en exposities. Er is ook een zeer uitgebreid en gevarieerd randprogramma met bijzondere gasten uit Nederland en Zuid-Afrika. Het is voor het eerst dat zoveel Haagse culturele instellingen betrokken zijn bij een internationaal festival van dit formaat. We danken tal van fondsen, de gemeente Den Haag en het jubilerende Hivos Cultuurfonds voor de steun, want zonder deze ondersteuning zouden deze BIG5 onontdekt blijven.

For tourists, South Africa’s Big 5 is synonymous with the five wild animals you really have to see when visiting South Africa. For some people it’s actually the only reason to go. But from now on, there’s another Big 5, closer to home: of theatre, dance, film, music and visual art. The encounter between South African and Dutch theatre producers, filmmakers, choreographers, musicians and artists will form the basis of this new international BIG5 festival.

During the weekend of 11th, 12th and 13th June, you will witness interesting new productions; performances, films, music and expositions that will be presented in Europe for the first time. Moreover, there will be a very elaborate and varied fringe programme, with special guests from The Netherlands and South Africa. This is the first time that so many cultural institutions of The Hague are involved in an international festival of this size. We owe gratitude to many funds, to the municipality of The Hague and to the celebrating Hivos Cultuurfonds, for without their support these BIG5 would remain undiscovered.
